About Us
Herman LandscapeA Tradition of Quality for More Than 80 Years
For over eight decades, Herman Landscape has been helping homeowners create outdoor spaces that are as beautiful as they are functional. What began as a small, family-owned business has grown into the oldest landscape company in Dane County, serving generations of homeowners with thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and personalized service.
Today, as a third-generation family business, we're proud to continue the values that have guided our company since the beginning. Every project is built on trust, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to helping our customers create outdoor spaces they'll enjoy for years to come.
Our Story: Rooted in Dane County Since 1943
Herman Landscape Service Inc. was founded in 1943 by Robert L. "Bob" Herman. While attending the University of Wisconsin, Bob began working as a driver for William "Bill" McKay and soon found himself selling and planting stock from McKay Nursery. In 1944, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Landscape Architecture and continued building what began as a local, one-man operation.
Over the years, Herman Landscape grew alongside the community, expanding into a full-service landscape company serving Madison, Dane County, and southern Wisconsin. When Bob retired in 1975, he entrusted the family business to the next generation, including his three sons, daughter, son-in-law, and many of the experienced employees who had helped build the company alongside him.
Bob's contributions to the industry were recognized in 2007 when he was posthumously inducted into the Wisconsin Green Industry Federation Hall of Fame. Today, the third generation of the Herman family continues his legacy, carrying forward the same appreciation for nature, quality craftsmanship, and creating beautiful outdoor spaces that has shaped Herman Landscape for more than 80 years.
Our Approach
Every property has its own opportunities and challenges, which is why we never believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. We begin by listening. We take the time to understand your goals, evaluate your property, and create a plan that fits your vision, your lifestyle, and your budget. Whether we're designing a custom landscape, installing a new patio, restoring a shoreline, or refreshing an existing landscape, our goal remains the same: to deliver quality work that enhances your property and stands the test of time. This customer-focused planning approach is reflected throughout the information Herman provided about its design process.
